Wanneer een BMW E36 M3 zijn originele oranje knipperlichten voor en achter nog bezit, kun je vrijwel met zekerheid stellen dat hij nooit in de verkeerde handen is gevallen. Welnu, dat klopt bij dit exemplaar volledig en het laat zich ook eenvoudig aflezen aan de sublieme (oringinele) staat waarin deze attractieve sportcoupé verkeert. Optisch, maar technisch net zozeer, wat wij kunnen onderbouwen met een gedocumenteerde servicehistorie. Die beslaat overigens geen tientallen pagina’s in het boekje, wat eenvoudigweg komt door de lage kilometerstand van 62.000. Ook de laatste eigenaar, de directeur van een BMW-dealer met het M-hart juiste plaats, bezuinigde nergens op onderhoud.

Nieuw werd deze M3 in juli 1993 afgeleverd in het Duitse Meppen, niet ver over de grens bij Emmen, lang voordat die regio zijn eigen circuit kreeg. Daar heeft de auto dus zeker nooit rondgecirkeld en ook nadien bleef hem een zwaar leven bespaard, toen hij emigreerde naar Noorwegen, waar strenge snelheidslimieten gelden en de politie geen genade kent met jakkeraars. Kortom, een gran turismo die nog zo fris als een hoentje is, zoals het oude spreekwoord zegt. Hij straalt in het cleane Sterlingsilber Metallic, een kleur die de glorieuze Duitse racegeschiedenis ademt en die details mooi naar voren brengt, zoals de welhaast artistiek vormgegeven M3-spiegels met hun aerodynamische profiel.

De kuipstoelen met geïntegreerde hoofdsteunen en zittingverlengers zien er zo spectaculair uit, dat het lijkt alsof ze uit de optielijst komen. Dat is niet het geval, maar het geldt wél voor de elektrische verstelling, verwarming en de bekledingscombinatie. Een mix van stof in de stijl van de jaren negentig op de centrale vlakken en alcantara op de wangen, die kom je niet vaak tegen. Heel racy en bovendien functioneel, want tijdens snel bochtenwerk houden deze stroeve materialen de inzittenden uitstekend op hun plek. Het behoeft geen betoog dat deze M3 met zijn 286 pk sterke drielitermotor op zijn best is wanneer hij zich mag uitleven. Wordt het echt heftig, dan kunnen de passagiers stoom afblazen via het schuifdak en schakelt de bestuurder de cruise-control in om te relaxen. 
If a BMW E36 M3 still has its original orange front and rear indicators, you can be almost certain that it has never fallen into the wrong hands. Well, that is certainly the case with this particular car, and it is also evident from the superb (original) condition of this attractive sports coupé. Visually, but just as much technically, which we can substantiate with a documented service history. Incidentally, this does not run to dozens of pages in the booklet, which is simply due to the low mileage of 62,000 km. The last owner, the director of a BMW dealership with the M-heart in the right place, did not skimp on maintenance in any way.

This M3 was delivered new in July 1993 in Meppen, Germany, not far across the border from Emmen, long before that region got its own circuit. So the car certainly never did a lap there, and even afterwards it was spared a hard life when it emigrated to Norway, where strict speed limits apply and the police show no mercy to speeders. In short, a gran turismo that is still as fresh as a daisy, as the old saying goes. It shines in pristine Sterling Silver Metallic, a colour that exudes Germany’s glorious racing history and beautifully highlights details such as the almost artistically designed M3 mirrors with their aerodynamic profile.

The bucket seats with integrated headrests and seat extensions look so spectacular that you’d think they were from the options list. That isn’t the case, but the electric adjustment, heating and upholstery combination certainly are. A mix of 1990s-style fabric on the central panels and Alcantara on the side bolsters is something you don’t come across often. Very racy and, moreover, functional, as these grippy materials keep the occupants firmly in place during fast cornering. It goes without saying that this M3, with its 286-horsepower three-litre engine, is at its best when it’s allowed to let loose. When things get really intense, passengers can let off steam via the sunroof whilst the driver engages the cruise control to relax.
