HISTORIE/DOCUMENTATIE
Misschien wel de meest legendarische auto ooit gemaakt met een roemruchtig verhaal: De DeLorean DMC-12, ontwikkeld door John DeLorean is het ultieme stijlicoon uit de jaren "80 waar vele boeken, films en documentaires over zijn gemaakt. Het merk heeft auto's geproduceerd van januari 1981 tot medio 1983. Dit exemplaar met chassisnummer eindigend op #5318 is gebouwd in oktober 1981 en is daarmee een vroeg exemplaar. Dankzij het originele afleverdocument hebben we veel historie en specifieke eigenschappen van dit exemplaar kunnen achterhalen! Het jaar 1982 moet voor de eerste eigenaar een spectaculair begin van het jaar zijn geweest, want op 4 januari 1982 werd dit exemplaar als één van de eerste exemplaren afgeleverd, en wel in Temple City, Californië. Een begeerde optie waarover de auto beschikt, is airconditioning. De nieuwprijs van de auto bedroeg $ 28.825. De auto is ca. 15 jaar in bezit geweest van de 1e eigenaar en is tot tenminste 1997 verbleven in Californië. De auto is momenteel geregistreerd op Duits kenteken maar kan uiteraard ook door ons worden geregistreerd in een ander land. Sinds 2023 zijn veel onderdelen vernieuwd, waarvan veel facturen aanwezig zijn. In 2026 is een droog-ijsstraling uitgevoerd (dry-ice-cleaning). De auto verkeert in een goede en zeer originele staat.

EXTERIEUR
Het exterieur verkeert in een goede en zeer originele staat. De carrosserie is uitgevoerd in roestvrijstaal en is dan ook roestvrij. De kunststof voor- en achterbumper verkeren in een nette staat. De achterbumper is voorzien van roestvrijstalen DeLorean letters en witte knipperlichten. De originele 14" en 15" lichtmetalen velgen verkeren in goede staat en zijn voorzien van zo goed als nieuwe Yokohoma banden.

INTERIEUR
Ook het interieur verkeert in een goede en originele staat. De originele lederen bekleding is uitgevoerd in lichtgrijs. De originele radio-cassettespeler is nog aanwezig. Ook de kofferruimte aan de voorzijde verkeert in een goede staat.

TECHNISCH
Het chassis is uitzonderlijk gaaf, origineel en roestvrij (zie onze uitgebreide fotoreportage inclusief foto's van de onderzijde). De auto is goed onderhouden en is technisch goed, wat zich vertaald in een goed rijgedrag. In 2023 is groot onderhoud uitgevoerd (bij 12.295 mijlen) en sinds 2023 is ruim € 8.000,- geïnvesteerd. Technisch is alles ge-dry-ice-cleaned. Helemaal rijklaar voor de volgende eigenaar!

ALGEMEEN
DeLorean is wereldberoemd dankzij de film 'Back to the Future' uit 1985 waarin de auto als tijdmachine fungeert. Maar ook over de flamboyante eigenaar van het merk 'John DeLorean' en het ontstaan van de DMC-12 zijn vele boeken en series gerealiseerd. John DeLorean was een succesvol technicus en zakenman die zijn carrière had opgebouwd tot aan vice-president van het destijds wereldwijd grootste autoconcert General Motors. Mede vanwege zijn droom om een eigen auto te ontwikkelen stapte hij in 1973 uit het bedrijf. Zijn wens was om een hoogst speciale, betaalbare sportauto te bouwen die zijn tijd ver vooruit was en lang mee zou gaan. Wat volgde was wereldwijd nieuws. Het ontwerp komt van de hand van het Italiaanse Giugiaro en technisch verantwoordelijk was Colin Chaplin (oprichter van het Engelse automerk Lotus dat destijds zeer succesvol was in de racerij). Het futuristische ontwerp is breed en laag en de carrosserie is vervaardigd uit roestvrij staal. Wat verder opvalt zijn de vleugeldeuren en de motor die in het midden geplaatst is. Deze aluminium 2.8 liter 6-cilinder motor is afkomstig van Renault/Peugeot/Volvo.

Van de DMC-12, gericht op de Amerikaanse markt, moesten 30.000 stuks per jaar gebouwd gaan worden met een nieuwprijs van 12.000 dollar (hiernaar verwijst de 12 uit DMC-12). Na een moeizame zoektocht naar een plek om de auto te produceren is met behulp van de Britse regering uiteindelijk Noord-Ierland aangewezen. Een plek waar destijds veel werkloosheid heerste en een oorlog tussen protestanten en katholieken was. Dit gaf de productie van de DMC-12 een extra politieke dimensie. Vanwege een koerswijziging van de Britse pond was de uiteindelijke nieuwprijs ongeveer het dubbele dan vooraf werd aangegeven. Ondanks ca. een half miljard geïnvesteerd belastinggeld van de Britse overheid bleef het gebrek aan geld een probleem, wat uiteindelijk heeft geresulteerd in een faillissement van het merk na een productie van ca. 9.000 auto's.

HISTORY/DOCUMENTATION
Perhaps the most legendary car ever made, with an illustrious history: the DeLorean DMC-12, developed by John DeLorean, is the ultimate style icon of the 1980s, the subject of numerous books, films and documentaries. The brand produced cars from January 1981 until mid-1983. This example, with a chassis number ending in #5318, was built in October 1981, making it an early model. Thanks to the original delivery document, we have been able to trace much of the history and specific features of this car! The year 1982 must have been a spectacular start to the year for the first owner, as on 4 January 1982 this car was delivered as one of the very first examples, in Temple City, California. A sought-after option fitted to the car is air conditioning. The car’s original price was $28,825. The car was owned by the first owner for approximately 15 years and remained in California until at least 1997. The car is currently registered with a German number plate but can, of course, also be registered by us in another country. Since 2023, many parts have been replaced, for which many invoices are available. In 2026, dry-ice cleaning was carried out. The car is in good and very original condition.

EXTERIOR
The exterior is in good and very original condition. The bodywork is made of stainless steel and is therefore rust-free. The plastic front and rear bumpers are in good condition. The rear bumper features stainless steel DeLorean lettering and white indicators. The original 14‘ and 15’ alloy wheels are in good condition and fitted with virtually new Yokohama tyres.

INTERIOR
The interior is also in good and original condition. The original leather upholstery is light grey. The original radio/cassette player is still fitted. The front boot area is also in good condition.

TECHNICAL
The chassis is exceptionally sound, original and rust-free (see our extensive photo report, including photos of the underside). The car has been well maintained and is in good mechanical condition, which translates into excellent handling. A major service was carried out in 2023 (at 12,295 miles) and over €8,000 has been invested since 2023. Technically, everything has been dry-ice cleaned. Fully roadworthy for the next owner!

GENERAL
DeLorean is world-famous thanks to the 1985 film ‘Back to the Future’, in which the car serves as a time machine. However, numerous books and series have also been produced about the flamboyant owner of the brand, John DeLorean, and the origins of the DMC-12. John DeLorean was a successful engineer and businessman who had built his career to the position of vice-president at General Motors, then the world’s largest car manufacturer. Partly due to his dream of developing his own car, he left the company in 1973. His ambition was to build a highly distinctive, affordable sports car that was far ahead of its time and would last for years to come. What followed made headlines worldwide. The design was created by the Italian firm Giugiaro, whilst Colin Chaplin (founder of the British car brand Lotus, which was highly successful in motor racing at the time) was responsible for the technical aspects. The futuristic design is wide and low, and the bodywork is made of stainless steel. Other striking features include the gull-wing doors and the mid-mounted engine. This aluminium 2.8-litre 6-cylinder engine is sourced from Renault/Peugeot/Volvo.

The DMC-12, aimed at the American market, was intended to be built at a rate of 30,000 units per year with a new price of 12,000 dollars (hence the ‘12’ in DMC-12). After a difficult search for a location to produce the car, Northern Ireland was eventually chosen with the help of the British government. It was a place where unemployment was rife at the time and where there was a conflict between Protestants and Catholics. This gave the production of the DMC-12 an additional political dimension. Due to a change in the exchange rate of the British pound, the final retail price was approximately double what had been initially stated. Despite around half a billion pounds of British taxpayers’ money being invested, the lack of funds remained a problem, which ultimately resulted in the brand going bankrupt after producing around 9,000 cars.
